CROWSON’S CANALWARE BY LESLIE CROWSON
I have been narrowboating for the past 15years and since then have had an interest in ‘Roses and Castles’. I bought Anne Young’s book ‘Paint Roses and Castles’ with a view to having a go myself. Needless to say, it sat on the shelf for a few years until three Christmas’ ago when a friend asked me what I wanted as a present. I said to her to buy me something to get me started on my painting, not thinking she would take me up on my suggestion. It wasn’t until the next Easter, when out on Nb Camberwick Green, that I was able to make a start. That same week another boater commented on my first pieces and said that they were saleable and didn’t believe I’d only just started.
I carried on at home in Peterborough and sold items at local Christmas fairs. I also got some commissions from the enterprise. I applied for a trading licence for the boat and was successful, so eighteen months ago I started trading whenever I am on the boat. If I’m lucky it pays for the diesel, and buyers have the satisfaction of having something unique. |
