2020 was a Difficult Year for the RCTA and Members alike.
Like everyone else, we have faced a totally unknown scenario. One of the main features of the RCTA, the Floating Markets, came to an abrupt halt when lockdown was announced.
This forced us to adapt. With unknown timescales, we hoped that our biggest ever schedule of markets might just be slightly delayed. But that was before anyone realised how serious the situation was. In the end, many markets were cancelled, although we were able to hold a very small number on a much smaller scale later in the season.
These more intimate markets did prove successful for those members able to attend. The committee worked hard – not only with CRT, but local Councils and agencies including the Police and Public Health – to ensure the safety of these events. With sanitising stations and marshals ensuring that new term “social distancing” (something this time last year no-one had even heard of) was adhered to.
As 2021 approached, we were looking forward with optimism. But then “Lockdown 3.0” (as it has been dubbed) was announced. Obviously quite right and totally essential in the circumstances. However, along with many other businesses throughout the country, this deals another blow to our members.
In some ways, it is fortunate that this lockdown is happening in the early part of the year before the towpath trading season really starts. But, of course, we still have no idea how long restrictions will be in force for.
So, once again, the RCTA is rallying for our members by adjusting for and responding to the situation.
Last year, we started our “online markets”, which proved very successful for many of our traders. We also promote their businesses through the RCTA #buyitoffaboat Shop, so follow this group to support our traders and get access to some great products and deals.
This year, we shall continue to do this as well as promote our website which gives much wider access to our members through the Traders’ Directory. We shall also be sharing more about what we are doing through our blog, so please subscribe and follow us and, above all, share and spread the word.
